We're mid-install on a backyard paver patio in Saint Paul, and this is where the real work happens - before a single paver gets set. What you're looking at is the base stage, and honestly, this is the part that determines whether a patio lasts five years or fifty.

A lot of contractors out there are still recommending class five gravel and sand as a base. It's a common approach, but it's not the right one for Minnesota. Our winters are brutal. The freeze-thaw cycle tears apart patios that aren't built to handle it, and a class five and sand base simply doesn't drain well enough to hold up long-term. We build on a fully open graded base instead. It drains better, it handles freeze-thaw without shifting, and it's been proven to outperform the old method in climates like ours.

The open graded base isn't just a preference - it's a decision we make specifically because of where we work. Minnesota homeowners deserve a patio that doesn't start rocking and settling after a few hard winters. Getting the base right means the finished surface stays level, the joints stay tight, and the whole thing holds its shape for years.

From there, it's all about layout and clean finish work. The pavers get set carefully, edges get locked in, and the final result looks as good as it holds up. We don't rush through the base to get to the fun part. The base IS the fun part, because that's where the quality lives.

If you've been thinking about adding a paver patio to your backyard, this is the kind of work that separates a patio that holds up from one that doesn't. We'd be glad to talk through what the right approach looks like for your yard.
