Sloped yards are tough. They look awkward, they drain poorly, and most of the time they just sit there - unusable. That's exactly the kind of problem we were brought in to solve on this Minneapolis job.
We're mid-build on a segmental block retaining wall that steps down the slope in a clean, structured way. The wall ties directly into an existing concrete staircase, so everything flows together rather than feeling like separate pieces bolted onto the yard. That kind of integration takes planning up front, and you can see how the block courses are already creating defined level changes that make sense of the grade.
Drainage is a big part of why retaining walls fail over time. We're not just stacking block - the base prep, backfill, and gravel work happening here are what give this wall its longevity. A wall that looks good but isn't built right won't last a Minneapolis winter, let alone a decade of freeze-thaw cycles.
Once the wall structure is locked in, the paver patio goes in to fill out the usable space it creates. That's the payoff - a flat, functional outdoor area where there used to be nothing but a steep, muddy slope. The homeowner gets real square footage they can actually use.
Projects like this take a little longer because there are a lot of moving parts. But getting it right matters more than getting it done fast. We're making steady progress and we're excited to show the finished result.
