Most people only think about concrete when they see the finished slab. What they don't think about is everything that happens before a single truck shows up - and that's exactly where a job either holds up for decades or starts failing in a few years.

Here's what we were working with on this Saint Paul backyard: a full patio area and connecting walkway that needed proper excavation, grading, and form work before any concrete could go in. The sub-base compaction, the gravel bed, the form placement - all of it has to be dialed in. Skip any of those steps and you're looking at cracking, settling, and drainage problems down the road.

The curved form work you see here is one of those details that separates a clean, custom install from a basic square slab. Getting that curve set correctly means the finished walkway actually flows with the yard. It's not just aesthetic - it's about making the space feel intentional.

We use a well-compacted gravel base under every pour. That layer is what keeps concrete from moving as the ground shifts through Minnesota freeze-thaw cycles. If the base isn't right, it doesn't matter how good the pour is. This is the kind of groundwork that protects your investment long-term.

This is what walkway and patio installation actually looks like before the concrete arrives. Clean forms, solid base, everything set to receive the pour correctly. When you put this much work into the prep, the finished surface comes out exactly the way it should.
